The razor blade is a classic item of costume jewellery. Here, Patrick Carpentier reinterprets it by engraving the word ALL on one side and the word NOTHING on the other. Suddenly we can no longer look at this multi-purpose blade the way we used to. A mystery arises from it. All or nothing, like a cry for freedom, a revolutionary chant that we all understand. A sparkling flutter of brutal gravity.
Writing is always the starting point for Patrick Carpentier. It is writing that brings to the fore a message of absence. Whether in his films, installations, sculptures, or performances, he constructs a simple narrative centred on the observation of language through antinomies. It is by observing the unspoken that he questions speech, a silence seen as a counter-speech, a counter-sign, which itself becomes a sign in itself.
